Out of Environment space message (Windows 95)

The floppy disk version of the installation program and MACREX-6 itself use some environment variables to locate the files they need. When you run a DOS prompt under Windows 95 by default only enough environment space for existing variables will be allocated - this may lead to the out of space message when you are running the installation program.

Here's how to put this right.

  1. Close all your DOS sessions by typing "exit" at the DOS prompt.
  2. Right click on the Start button with your right mouse button.
  3. Select Open from the popup menu and left click it.
  4. Double click the folder icon labelled Programs.
  5. Find the icon labelled MS-DOS Prompt and right-click it.
  6. Select Properties from the popup menu.
  7. Select the tab labelled Memory from the dialogue box that appears.
  8. Towards the top right hand corner of the dialogue box there is an item labelled Initial Environmnent which will probably have the word Auto appearing next to it. Click on the small downward-pointing arrow to the right of this and select a reasonable value (eg 2048) from the drop-down list by clicking on it.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close the two windows that have been opened on the screen by clicking on the small x in the top right hand corner.

Next time you use the DOS prompt you will have more environment space.
