INDEXING OF ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTS USING MACREX 7

We have introduced features in MACREX version 7 to to enable index entries to be embedded in HTML files, providing that the source document is available in electronic form and an editing program (which might be a text editor or a specific editor for the source document format) is available to edit the document.

The main advantage of this system are that the tags are embedded while the index is being created, rather than as a completely separate process.  It also allows indexers to user the full functionality of the specialist  indexing software that they are familiar with, rather than having to learn a completely new system.

1. The text for each index entry is either typed in by the indexer or copied from the source document into MACREX via the Windows clipboard.

2. MACREX will automatically produce the text necessary for hypertext links with a single keystroke. As many entries as are wanted can use the same hypertext link and these can be added, edited or deleted at any stage in the making of the index. Multiple references are also possible.
.
3. Pre-formatted text to provide tags within the HTML document as the hypertext target is automatically produced by MACREX and transferred to the document via the Windows clipboard.

4. Cross-references ("see" and "see also") are created by the indexer and verified as in a normal index. At the end of the production of the index, hypertext links for cross references are automatically generated.

5. When the final index file is produced, each hypertext link text is correctly positioned in order to get accurate correct HTML linking.

6. All the indexer has to do is load specially designed definition files into the program; no manual coding is necessary.

A demonstration version of the program with all the above features is available on this website.  The download includes a Windows Help File showing examples of how to use it.
